Arthur Davies (Chippy)

Arthur Davies (Chippy) King’s Scout and Senior Scout Leader.

Chippy was another Leader who was also a WW2 veteran, who served in Burma. Having a trade as a carpenter and joiner he was a key player in building our first Headquarters. He was supported by Jack Knight who was called Chief. Chief was a welder/fabricator and was responsible for the manufacture of the original gate and 1st Great Sutton sign. Currently little is known about Chief except that he was a very quiet and unassuming person with whom the newly formed Senior Scouts really got on well with and learned so much. Chippy showed the Scouts how he used to tie up prisoners of war in the Burmese jungle with just 6” of paracord! Chippy came to live in Great Sutton having grown up in a small farming community called Llansantffraid, Montgomeryshire Wales. It has the River Vyrnwy running through it. The Senior Scouts who formed the first section were also those who had sat at Monty’s kitchen table all those years ago. Like Ventures and Explorers of today more adventurous outdoor activities were undertaken. The first Camp was held at Valle Crucis Abbey, Llangollen. Chippy arrived on his Motorbike and sidecar rucksack on his back and camp equipment in the sidecar. Awaiting him were the Seniors in an orderly queue to have a go on the motor bike in the field, Chippy was very accommodating particularly as the motorbike was his only way of getting to work on building sites all over Cheshire. Getting invested is always a memorable occasion no matter which section you are in and Seniors were no exception, Chippy and Chief thought it would be, no matter the weather, to hold investments outside wherever a camp or hike was taking place. Being a very practical person Chippy developed pioneering within the section to a very high skill level. Chippy’s building knowledge and skills were central to the completion of the Headquarters. Ivor his son home from naval training in Portsmouth recalls helping his dad lay the floor to the new building just prior to the official opening. After passing on the running of the Seniors to younger leaders he looked after the maintenance of the Headquarters and Scout Fellowship duties with Monty.
