Jack Walker (Lovat)

Jack Walker (Lovat) our third Scout Master.

Jack served as a commando during WW2 and took as his Scouting name ‘Lovat’ after his wartime commanding officer Simon Fraser the 15th Lord Lovat. Lovat was part of the D-Day landings operating behind enemy lines in France. He would on many occasions be seen walking through the village wearing his kilt (Fraser Clan) to Scout activities and meetings. On one occasion the local youths were sitting on the wall by the chip shop in Great Sutton and thought it would be fun to whistle as Lovat passed by! This proved to be a big mistake! He stopped and asked them what they were whistling at? After a very short conversion he pushed a couple of the biggest of them backwards off the wall (fortunately with only their pride hurt) and continued on to the Troop meeting. Lovat devised the 1st Great Sutton Scout Troop yell usually sung at campfires, particularly when other Troops were present such as a District Camps. The idea was for each Troop to sing their yell as loud as possible.

The yell has the following words:

“BOOM-A-RANGA, BOOM-A-RANGA

BOOM-BOOM-BOOM

CHICK-A-RACA, CHICK-A-RACA

CHOW-CHOW-CHOW

OO-HA-OO-HA-HA

WE-ARE

FIRST-FIRST GREAT SUTTON”
